Despite what it might sound like, Barbara by Barrie isn’t the name of some 70’s British sitcom, it is the latest album from an artist called Barrie Lindsey who used to be in a band called Barrie before they split and she became, erm, Barrie.
Oh yeah, and despite what you might assume from the name, Barrie is a she not a he, Barrie is a nickname, her birth name is Barbara which is presumably where the album title came from!
History lesson over, what does the album actually sound like? 35 minutes of impeccably produced, slightly wonky, indie electro pop. Lots of interesting songs that randomly feature the odd horn or harp, all sat on a thick, synth foundation with simple lyrics delivered via Lindsey’s beautifully sweet voice.
If any of that sounds like it might tickle your pickle, then give the tracks below a go.
I think this orange vinyl edition was ordered directly from the artist as it also came with a signed art print. If you fancy it, the album is on sale at the moment for £13 via Rough Trade on opaque orange disc.
I saw Barrie support Japanese Breakfast in Manchester on Monday night and can confirm she is excellent live too.
Tracks To Try: ‘Frankie’, ‘Jenny’, ‘Concrete’, ‘Basketball’.
