Oscar Olsen is a Swedish industrial designer who brings iconic and original products to life. According to his bio, he likes to bridge the gap between problem-solving design, innovation-driven practice, and design as an artistic and cultural phenomenon. He has turned his attention to the humble turntable and come up with something striking.
Disco Volante is a concept for a fully automatic, wall-mounted turntable that aims to be a statement piece in one’s interior. It deconstructs the classic turntable design, breaking it into individual elements for aesthetical and functional reasons.
The striking juxtaposition between the vibrant, organic-looking tonearm housing and the machined, sober steel framework is at the heart of this design philosophy.
This separation elevates the tonearm housing, transforming it into what seems like an independent entity serenading the vinyl.
He wanted to utilize each material's unique properties and characteristics with Disco Volante, allowing them to largely influence the form. The steel framework offers a rigid foundation for the turntable, while the moulded, funky plastic tonearm housing plays the main role visually.
I think this looks stunning, although I'm not sure it will satisfy the obsessive demands of the seasoned audiophile with a thin, aluminium plinth supported by a couple of delicate hinges, but I'd love to be wrong.
